Remembering Alison Carter

We are sad to share the passing of a longtime friend, volunteer and Dole Institute staffer. Alison Carter worked for Sen. Bob Dole and later served on our staff for 10 years. Originally hired by Director Bill Lacy, she also volunteered in the archives last year for Assistant Director and Senior Archivist Audrey Coleman.

An obituary is available here. A Memorial Service in celebration of Alison’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 15, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 West 6th Street, Lawrence, KS. A private family graveside interment service was held in the Great Bend Cemetery on February 2, 2019.

A note from Bill Lacy:
I’m sad to report that a former member of the Dole Institute team, Alison Carter, has passed. Alison was a key part of our team for 10 years. She took thousands of photos of activities at the institute, greeted attendees and embraced our mission and culture.

When I first met Alison after accepting the role of director in 2004 she informed me she wanted to be “the first walk-on Dole Institute staffer.” She would become that, and she made a real difference here during her time. Sen. Bob Dole and Chancellors Bernadette Gray-Little and Bob Hemenway always enjoyed viewing her photographs of our events.

Alison will be missed. Our condolences to her husband George, daughter Elizabeth, and all her family and friends.

A note from Dr. Barbara Ballard:
Alison Carter was so dedicated to the Dole Institute. Many of you will remember her taking pictures of you when you attended events at the institute, and at the end of the evening, Alison presented you with the photos. Alison had an infectious smile and really enjoyed being around people. She loved Sen. Dole and promoted him at every opportunity, especially with students.

How many times did you hear Alison say, “Smile and say, ‘Hi Bob Dole!’”?  She loved the Dole Youth Civic Leadership Institute (YCLI) and the Tribute to Veterans.  Alison always sent an email to let me know she was thinking about these two programs.

Alison was one of a kind!  It was a pleasure to work with her at the Dole Institute, and I missed her when she retired. Alison will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

A note from Audrey Coleman:
Alison Carter was a bridge between the Dole Archives and the living legacy of Sen. Dole, his staff, and his far-reaching community of supporters over many decades. She used her energy and enthusiasm to help us bolster that legacy by contributing materials and relating her memories of “Dole world,” an ongoing effort even into her retirement.

Alison’s spirit and contributions live on in the work that we do each day in the archives, a place (to borrow her words) “for and about all of us.”
