1980s

Dole ushers in a sweeping reform as chairman of the Senate Finance committee. In 1981 he plays an integral role in saving Social Security as a member of the National Commission on Social Security Reform. Dole is voted Majority Leader of the Senate in 1985 and helps to see passage of 163 bills during that year, including the important 1985 Farm Bill. Dole announces his candidacy for President in 1987, but quickly drops out of the primaries. In 1989, Bob and Elizabeth Dole travel to Poland to witness elections and meet with newly elected President Lech Walesa.
