Senator Dole helps to provide basic human rights to over 43 million Americans with the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Dole’s international profile increases abroad and he is successful in arranging a trip for Russian President Boris Yeltsin to visit Kansas. Dole announces his bid for the Presidency in 1995, and retires from the Senate to pursue the election on June 11, 1996. Following his loss in the election, Dole was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor by President Clinton.
