SUMMARY:China in the Heartland: Building a Balanced Approach
DESCRIPTION:As China’s influence grows around the world\, skepticism in the United States grows in tandem with it. Evidence of this is seen throughout the Heartland of America\, where anti-China legislation and rhetoric have grown over the years. Professor Jack Zhang of the KU Department of Political Science will be joined by Susan Thornton\, Vice Chair of the U.S. Heartland China Association and a retired senior U.S. diplomat with decades of experience in Eurasia and East Asia\, and Kyle Jaros\, an associate professor at the University of Notre Dame\, for a discussion on building a balanced approach for relations with China. \n  \n     \nThis program is presented in partnership with the United States Heartland China Association and the KU Department of Political Science. \n  \nWith support from the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations’ Public Intellectuals Program\, which is generously funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York. \n  \n\n  \nJack Zhang is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Kansas (KU) and director of the KU Trade War Lab. He is a Public Intellectuals Program fellow with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance at Princeton University in 2018-2019 and a Wilson China Fellow at the Wilson Center in 2021-2022. Dr. Zhang’s research explores the political economy of trade and conflict in East Asia. His newest projects investigate the determinants of U.S. foreign policy towards China\, the politics of the U.S.-China Trade War\, and the national security implications of economic interdependence with China. \n  \nSusan Thornton serves as Vice Chair of the U.S. Heartland China Association and is a retired senior U.S. diplomat with almost 30 years of experience with the U.S. State Department in Eurasia and East Asia. She is currently a senior fellow and research scholar at the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale University Law School; director of the Forum on Asia-Pacific Security at the National Committee on American Foreign Policy; and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. \nUntil July 2018\, Thornton was acting assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State and led East Asia policymaking amid crises with North Korea\, escalating trade tensions with China\, and a fast-changing international environment. In previous State Department roles\, she worked on U.S. policy toward China\, Korea\, and the former Soviet Union and served in leadership positions at U.S. embassies in Central Asia\, Russia\, the Caucasus\, and China. \nThornton received her master’s in international relations from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and her bachelor’s from Bowdoin College in economics and Russian. She serves on several non-profit boards and speaks Mandarin and Russian. \n  \nKyle Jaros is an associate professor of global affairs at the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. He is a faculty fellow of the Keough School’s Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies and the Pulte Institute for Global Development. \nJaros’s research explores the politics of urban and regional development\, intergovernmental relations\, and subnational foreign engagement with a focus on China. His first book\, China’s Urban Champions: The Politics of Spatial Development\, examines the policy logics and political factors driving uneven development in China’s provinces. \nBefore coming to Notre Dame\, he was an associate professor in the political economy of China at the University of Oxford’s School of Global and Area Studies and held a China Public Policy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Ash Center of the Harvard Kennedy School. Jaros earned a PhD and MA in political science from the Department of Government at Harvard University\, and an AB in public and international affairs\, and a certificate in Chinese language and culture from Princeton University. He also holds a graduate certificate in Chinese studies from the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies.

SUMMARY:The Candidates and America's Role in the World
DESCRIPTION:With rising tensions in the Middle East\, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine\, and continuous challenges on the international stage by China and Russia\, all eyes are focused on the candidates in this year’s elections\, and how they view America’s role in the world. Dole Institute Visiting Fellow Jerry Seib will be joined by former Senator and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to discuss where the candidates stand on the issues that impact our standing on the world stage. \n  \n\n  \nJerry Seib has been a journalist with The Wall Street Journal for almost 45 years. He served as the Journal’s Executive Washington Editor and wrote the weekly “Capital Journal” column for 29 years. He also reported from the Middle East for the Journal in the mid-1980s\, covered the White House\, has moderated three presidential debates\, and interviewed every president since Ronald Reagan. \n  \nChuck Hagel was the 24th Secretary of Defense\, serving from February 2013 to February 2015. He is the only Vietnam veteran and the first enlisted combat veteran to serve as Secretary of Defense. Hagel served two terms in the United States Senate (1997-2009) representing the state of Nebraska. While in the Senate\, he chaired and served on numerous committees\, including the Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees\, and Banking Committee’s subcommittees. He also served as the Chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China and the Senate Climate Change Observer Group. Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate\, Hagel was president of McCarthy & Company\, an investment banking firm in Omaha. He also served as Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration under President Ronald Reagan. Hagel is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha\, and has two children with his wife\, Lilibet.

Veteran political reporter Sasha Issenberg visits the Dole Institute for a conversation on his new book\, The Lie Detectives: In Search for a Playbook for Winning Elections in the Disinformation Age\, which explores how the new online landscape has forced those who run campaigns to rethink everything they thought they knew about how to reach and move voters. \n  \n     \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Lawrence Public Library and the KU Honors Program. \n  \n\n  \nSasha Issenberg is a journalist and the author of four previous books\, including The Victory Lab: The Secret Science of Winning Campaigns and\, most recently\, The Engagement: America’s Quarter-Century Struggle Over Same-Sex Marriage. He is a correspondent for Monocle\, and has written for New York\, the New York Times Magazine\, Bloomberg Businessweek\, and Politico Magazine. SUMMARY:The 2024 KU Security Conference Keynote Address with General Philip Breedlove
DESCRIPTION:On April 10\, General Philip M. Breedlove\, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe\, will open the 2024 KU Security Conference with a keynote address at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics. This address will kick off a two-day conference at the University of Kansas aimed at bringing together scholars and practitioners from academia\, the intelligence community\, and the military. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence (ICCAE) and the Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies (CREES). \n  \n\n  \nGen. Philip M. Breedlove\, USAF\, Ret.\, is a highly decorated retired general of the U.S. Air Force where he reached the highest levels of military leadership as one of six geographic combatant commanders and the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. Throughout his 39 years of service\, General Breedlove served in a variety of demanding command and staff positions\, leading large-scale\, diverse\, global operations across two theaters of combat and earning a reputation as an inspirational leader that focuses on his people\, their families\, and mission accomplishment. \nAs the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and the Commander of U.S. European Commander\, he answered directly to NATO’s governing body\, the North Atlantic Council\, and to the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense. He led the forces of 28 nations and several partners to ensure the security of an alliance that accounts for more than half of the world’s gross domestic product. Gen. Breedlove also served as the Commander of U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa\, as Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force\, and as Assistant Chief of Staff for Air Operations\, Plans\, and Requirements. \nHe earned his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in aerospace technology from Arizona State University. Additionally\, he completed a Masters of International Security Affairs from the National War College\, a Fellowship in International Security Affairs\, Seminar XXI from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed Leadership at the Peak at the Center from Creative Leadership\, Colorado Springs. Gen. Breedlove now serves as the CEO of Emerald Coast Strategic Solutions\, on the Georgia Tech Civil and Environmental Engineering School Advisory Board\, and on the Board of Directors of the Atlantic Council.

Join us for a discussion on key insights from the 2023 Kansas Speaks public opinion survey\, addressing issues such as marijuana legalization\, Medicaid expansion\, abortion rights\, climate change\, and more. This event will explore crucial topics affecting young people and the wider community in Kansas\, combining data-driven insights from the survey with real-world experiences and legislative perspectives. \nDr. Alexandra Middlewood is the Political Science Department Chair at Wichita State University. Her areas of expertise include public opinion\, political behavior\, gun politics\, and gender. She is a contributing columnist for Insight Kansas\, a Policy Fellow at the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University\, contributes to the annual Kansas Speaks public opinion survey\, and is the former President of the Great Plains Political Science Association. She earned her PhD in Political Science at KU in 2019. \nRep. Christina Haswood (Diné/Navajo) is a State Legislator for the Kansas State House of Representatives House District 10. She is the Ranking Minority Member on the Joint Committee on State and Tribal Relations. She is known for her Native American and public health policy expertise. Christina helped pass Kansas’ first Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP) bill in 2021 and is an avid champion of reproductive rights. Christina is known for using social media in politics and for building the bench for young Kansans to be involved in state politics. \nRep. Nick Hoheisel is a Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives from the 97th district. Elected in November 2018\, he assumed office in 2019. Hoheisel is a native of Wichita\, Kansas\, and co-chair of the Kansas Future Caucus.

SUMMARY:Beyond KU: D.C. Internships
DESCRIPTION:Are you a current KU student considering a DC internship? Join us as we interview a panel of four former KU students and Student Advisory Board members as they talk about their internships in D.C. and how these experiences moved their careers forward. \n  \nThe program is presented in partnership with the KU Career Center \n  \n\n  \nEric Kros graduated from the University of Kansas in 2020 with a double major in Political Science and Public Administration as well as a minor in Business. During his time at KU\, he worked at the Dole Institute of Politics as a Development Intern and Discussion Group Student Coordinator. In 2017\, Eric interned for Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) in her Omaha district office. The next two summers\, he interned for Urban Swirski and Associates\, a Washington\, D.C.-based government relations firm focused on tax and trade issues. Eric then spent early 2020 as a Legislative Intern for Braden\, Heidner\, Lowe and Associates\, a Topeka-based lobbying firm. In May of 2020\, Eric started his career as an intern at a multi-client lobbying firm in Washington\, D.C.\, Capitol Hill Consulting Group (CHCG). He was then hired as a Legislative Assistant and eventually promoted to Legislative Director. At CHCG\, Eric primarily works in the Tribal\, association\, energy\, municipal\, and agriculture space. \nRaina Peter is a senior at the University of Kansas studying Economics and Political Science. She is an outreach coordinator at the Dole Institute of Politics and has had two internships in Washington DC. In Summer 2022\, she interned at the Department of State in the Office of Investment Affairs. In Summer 2023\, she interned on Capitol Hill for Representative Sharice Davids. While she doesn’t have confirmed plans post-graduation\, she hopes to return to DC in the political space whether that is for the government\, think tank\, or research-based firm. \nAmanda Petersen works to improve opportunities for young Kansans to thrive as the Director of Early Childhood at the Kansas State Department of Education. She graduated from the University of Kansas with bachelor’s degrees in economics and political science in 2015 and earned a master’s degree in public administration in 2018. Her D.C. internship supporting state advocacy organizations\, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities\, led to a subsequent semester as an intern in the Kansas Legislature and to her first jobs in state-level policy advocacy at Kansas Action for Children. \nMandy Snodgrass grew up on a small farm in northeast Kansas and graduated from KU. She has worked in a variety of political and nonprofit positions since high school\, including on federal and state campaigns\, in the Kansas statehouse\, and now in Washington D.C. Currently\, Mandy lives in Washington D.C. and works for Heritage Action\, the political partner organization of The Heritage Foundation as a Manager of Donor Communications. While at KU\, she interned on Capitol Hill for a former Kansas representative and also for the National Down Syndrome Society\, also in Washington DC.

Marked by a federal debt that has eclipsed $34 trillion\, growing annual deficits\, persistent inflation\, and rising interest costs\, Americans are increasingly frustrated by both the risks they present as well as the partisan gridlock in Washington over how to address them. America’s fiscal challenge is even more acute today given the significant economic issues that the 119th Congress and next administration will immediately face including the debt limit\, tax reform\, and Social Security and Medicare solvency\, to name a few. \nPlease join us at the Dole Institute as our two Visiting Fellows break down what’s at stake and why fiscal policy will remain front and center in the coming years. What will the potential impact be on our families and communities\, nation\, and global competitiveness? \n  \n \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Bipartisan Policy Center.  \n  \n \nRachel Snyderman\, Director of Economic Policy\, Bipartisan Policy Center\nRachel Snyderman serves as the Director of Economic Policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center. Rachel joined the BPC following federal service with the Millennium Challenge Corporation\, the Department of Commerce\, and the Office of Management and Budget. Earlier in her career\, she worked for EY and Innovations for Poverty Action. She earned her B.A. in Economics and Latin American Studies from Wellesley College and holds an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. \n  \n \nEmily Wielk\, Economic Policy Analyst\, Bipartisan Policy Center\nEmily Wielk is a Policy Analyst for BPC’s Economic Policy Program\, where her portfolio includes tax policy\, working families support\, and educational programming on fiscal policy. Prior to this role\, Wielk interned with the EPP team\, contributing to projects on tax policy and Social Security. Wielk holds a B.A. Public Policy and Sociology from Gettysburg College and a M.A. in Public Policy and Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies from the George Washington University.

Guirlinger\, the State Department’s Chief of the Ukraine Political Unit\, will discuss the current state of the U.S. policy toward Ukraine\, how these policies are designed and implemented\, and answer questions from the audience. \nUnlike other programs\, this program will not be live-streamed on our YouTube Channel\, so make plans to attend this event in-person. \nRyan Guirlinger has served as the Ukraine Political Unit Chief since August 2022. In his distinguished career with the State Department he has previously served as Saudi Arabia Senior Desk Officer in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs\, deputy economic counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Morocco\, economic officer at the U.S. Embassy in Algeria\, consular officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul\, Turkey\, and consular and economic officer at the U.S. Embassy in Honduras. In 2019\, he was the recipient of the inaugural Hayden Brown Award for Outstanding Leadership in Energy Security and Access. He joined the Foreign Service in September 2008\, and holds two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Maryland-College Park and a master’s degree from Syracuse University.

SUMMARY:A Question of Respect: Bringing Us Together in a Deeply Divided Nation
DESCRIPTION:Celinda Lake\, a Democrat\, and Ed Goeas\, a Republican\, have been crossing party lines for more than three decades to produce the Battleground Poll that takes a bipartisan look at America and its politics. Now they have co-authored a book that draws on what they have learned to describe how America has reached its current\, deeply fractured political condition and\, more importantly\, how the country might move beyond it. These two leading political practitioners will be at the Dole Institute to discuss their work\, including their central argument that the only way to escape the current polarization is through mutual respect. \nJerry Seib has been a journalist with The Wall Street Journal for almost 45 years. He served as the Journal’s Executive Washington Editor and wrote the weekly “Capital Journal” column for 29 years. He also reported from the Middle East for the Journal in the mid-1980s\, covered the White House\, has moderated three presidential debates\, and interviewed every president since Ronald Reagan. \nCelinda Lake was one of two main pollsters for the Biden campaign\, is the only Democratic pollster to play a major role in defeating two incumbent presidents\, and is a prominent pollster and political strategist for progressives. Celinda currently serves as President of Lake Research Partners. Lake’s polling and strategic advice has helped candidates such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to groundbreaking wins. Lake co-authored the book What Women Really Want with Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway. \nEd Goeas was President and C.E.O. of The Tarrance Group for thirty-five years\, one of the most respected and successful Republican survey research and strategy teams in American politics today. DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, the U.S. Supreme Court has reshaped key aspects of American law\, including First Amendment speech protections\, firearms regulation under the Second Amendment\, and the Executive Branch’s powers to implement laws. The Court appears poised to continue reshaping these fields in the coming term through a set of potentially transformative cases. In observation of Constitution Day\, Associate Director Dr. Barbara Ballard will lead a panel of emerging leaders in the legal profession – each of whom are former Dole Institute SAB members – to discuss these changes and how they see the profession evolving in the coming years. \nAdam Steinhilber is an attorney from Overland Park\, Kansas who recently finished clerking for the Honorable Timothy M. Tymkovich of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He previously clerked for the Honorable Mark S. Massa of the Indiana Supreme Court. He earned his J.D.\, magna cum laude\, from the University of Michigan Law School\, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and chaired the Federalist Society’s 39th annual National Student Symposium. He earned his B.A. in Political Science with honors from the University of Kansas\, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and proudly served as the Events Student Assistant at the Dole Institute of Politics. This fall\, he will join the Kansas City office of Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP as a litigation associate. \nEmily Depew is a research attorney with the Kansas Court of Appeals. Emily hails from Neodesha\, Kansas. She graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2023. At KU Law\, Emily was a three-time moot court national champion and was presented with one of the best speakers awards two years in a row at the moot court national championship competition. She worked as the Dole Institute Student Advisory Board coordinator for two years as an undergraduate at KU. Emily has also worked as a legislative fellow at the Kansas Revisor of Statutes office\, a legal intern at the U.S. Department of Transportation\, and a legal intern for Kansas Representative Barbara Ballard. \nJesse Burbank hails from Quinter\, Kansas\, and grew up moving around the world in a military family. He earned his bachelor’s degree with highest distinction in history and political science from the University of Kansas in 2017. He was a member of the Dole Institute Student Advisory Board\, and he served as Dole Institute Director Bill Lacy’s research assistant during his senior year. Jesse earned his law degree with honors from Harvard Law School in 2020\, where he was an editor of the Harvard International Law Journal. While in law school\, he served as a summer legal intern in the United States Supreme Court Office of Legal Counsel. He worked in private practice after law school at the law firm Sidley Austin LLP in Chicago before joining the U.S. Army JAG Corps in late 2022. Join us as we examine the state of the campaign with two prominent political journalists – Ali Vitali of NBC News and the Associated Press’s Seung Min Kim – in a conversation moderated by Brendan Buck\, NBC News Political Analyst and former top aide to House Speaker Paul Ryan and John Boehner. SUMMARY:Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine: planning\, operations\, and prospects
DESCRIPTION:On February 24\, 2022\, Russia began a war on Ukraine\, unleashing brutality on the European continent not seen since 1945. On June 28\, two scholars of war; Kevin Benson\, Ph.D.\, Colonel\, US Army (ret)\, and Prof. Chris Marsh\, Ph.D.\, Joint Special Operations University\, will assess the Russia-Ukraine war to date and offer their projections on how the war will progress. \nKevin Benson graduated from West Point in 1977 and served in the US Army for 30 years\, retiring in the rank of colonel. He commanded soldiers\, served as the lead planner for the 2003 invasion of Iraq\, and concluded his career as the Director of the School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth\, KS. He earned a PhD in American history from KU in 2011 and was also a Dole Fellow in 2011. \nDr. Marsh is Director of the Department of Strategic Research & Analysis at the Joint Special Operations University (JSOU)\, USSOCOM. He also serves as editor of the Special Operations Journal. Prior to joining JSOU\, Marsh taught at the U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) and Baylor University. He was also an intelligence analyst at the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command. Dr. Marsh is an expert on irregular warfare and Russian & East European studies\, having lived and conducted research throughout the region for over 25 years. DESCRIPTION:On Nov. 17\, the Dole Institute of Politics will debut The Counselors\, an engaging series featuring two advocates arguing either side of an important national issue. In a cross between a courtroom trial and a debate\, the two counselors will present their opposing arguments and call two expert witnesses each to help build their case. \nFocusing on criminal justice reform\, the theme for our November program is “Resolved: Cash bail will not be required for individuals who are not a flight risk or dangerous.” \nThe counselors for “Resolved” will be Edward C. Duckers\, partner at Stoel Rives LLP and head of the firm’s Litigation Practice\, and Pedro L. Irigonegaray\, attorney and partner at Irigonegaray\, Turney\, & Revenaugh. \nToday in the United States\, six out of every 10 people in jail are currently awaiting trial without having actually been convicted of a crime. In 2018\, the bipartisan FIRST STEP Act was signed into law\, creating legislation that would improve fairness in sentencing of federal crimes\, reduce recidivism and promote public safety. \nAt a time when a range of experts are calling for additional criminal justice reform\, The Counselors fall program aims to educate on both sides of the argument. \nJoin us 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday\, Nov. 17\, for the inaugural event followed by an open house reception. \nThe Counselors series is consistent with the mission of the Dole Institute of Politics – to promote political and civic participation as well as civil discourse in a bi-partisan\, balanced manner – and is made possible through a grant from the Koch Family Foundation. \nThis program is cosponsored by KU Debate and the University of Kansas School of Law.

DESCRIPTION:The Dole Institute of Politics invites you to join us for an online panel discussion on careers in public service featuring four former Dole Student Advisory Board members. \n  \nJulia Groblacher: Foreign Service Officer\, U.S. Department of State \nAfter graduating from KU in 2010\, Julia received her Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard JFK School of Government.  Since entering the Foreign Service in 2012\, Julia has served domestically on the Syria and Afghanistan desks\, and overseas at the U.S. embassies in Moscow\, Baghdad\, and Kabul. She most recently served as a member of Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman’s staff\, responsible for the Middle East\, counterterrorism\, cybersecurity\, and tech.  She will soon depart for U.S. Embassy Beirut. \nMarc Langston: Attorney\, Strategic Team Advising Research\, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs \nMarc Langston is a Wichita native and KU alumnus (’08) with bachelors degrees in political science and art history. He attended law school at Wake Forest University and spent the last decade working as an attorney in Washington\, DC. Marc’s legal experience includes a variety of positions in both the public and private sectors. \nEric Pahls: VP\, Big Dog Strategies \nEric Pahls is a proud native Kansan who served as Campaign Manager for Dr. Roger Marshall’s successful 2020 U.S. Senate Campaign. Prior to 2020\, he served as businesswoman Carly Fiorina’s Communications Director\, and as the youngest Press Secretary on Capitol Hill after working on Dr. Marshall’s successful 2016 Congressional campaign\, which notably unseated the incumbent in a primary. Eric is a graduate of the University of Kansas’ William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications\, and lives in Kansas City\, Kansas. \nAdam Steinhilber: Judicial Law Clerk to Justice Mark S. Massa\, Indiana Supreme Court \nAdam Steinhilber is an attorney and law clerk to the Honorable Mark S. Massa of the Indiana Supreme Court. He earned his J.D.\, magna cum laude\, from the University of Michigan Law School. SUMMARY:A Conversation on Race Part IV: The Extraordinary Life of Cyclist Major Taylor\, America’s First Black Sports Hero
DESCRIPTION:Investigative political reporter and author Michael Kranish will join us for our fourth installment of our A Conversation on Race series. He will discuss the life\, tribulations\, and career of Major Taylor\, the first American-born Black world champion in any sport\, fifty years before Jackie Robinson became a Major League baseball player. Kranish spent years collecting thousands of articles written about Taylor for his book\, “The World’s Fastest Man: The Extraordinary Life of Cyclist Major Taylor\, America’s First Black Sports Hero\,” in which he tells the story of how Taylor overcame insurmountable odds to become a world-class athlete during the Jim Crow era. Taylor’s trailblazing accomplishments had widespread impact across society and are relevant to conversations we are having about African American athletes today. \nThis program includes a book sale and signing with the author.

DESCRIPTION:Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman returns to the Institute to discuss his autobiography\, “Laughing at Myself: My Education in Congress\, on the Farm\, and at the Movies\,” based on his fascinating career path\, which took him from Kansas to D.C. and Hollywood. Glickman served as the Secretary of Agriculture for six years under President Clinton and represented Kansas’s 4th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives for 18 years. Glickman served as director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government from 2002 to 2004 and served as chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America Inc. from 2004 to 2010. He is also a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center and the former vice president of the Aspen Institute. \nThis event is cosponsored by KU’s Department of Film & Media Studies.

Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas will live-stream a special event featuring former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Thursday\, June 10 at 7 p.m. CDT on the institute’s YouTube channel.\n“We are excited to welcome President Santos back to the institute\,” said Director Bill Lacy. “He will be discussing his new book about his work on ending the Colombian Civil War. His efforts to end the 50-year-long conflict led to him winning the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize.” \nIn his book The Battle for Peace\, Santos shares the lessons he learned about war and peace and how to build a successful negotiation process in the midst of a conflict where a resolution seemed impossible. Prior to becoming president\, Santos had a long career of public service in Colombia\, including as minister of foreign trade\, minister of finance and public credit\, and minister of national defense. Santos prepared for these roles by attending the University of Kansas\, through postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics and Harvard University\, as a Fulbright Fellow at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy\, and in the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. He is founder and chairman of the board of Compaz Center of Resources for Peace\, which works for the empowerment of victims\, the consolidation of peace\, the reduction of poverty and inequality\, and the defense of the environment in Colombia and the planet. \nThis special program will only be live-streamed to the institute’s YouTube channel and its website\, www.doleinstitute.org. SUMMARY:A Conversation on Race Part III: Baseball: The Color Barrier
DESCRIPTION:The third installment of the series “A Conversation on Race” will feature the President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum Bob Kendrick\, Scout for the New York Yankees Darryl Monroe\, and will be moderated by Senior Associate Director of the Institute\, Dr. Barbara W. Ballard. \n“Since the founding of the first professional baseball league in this country\, racism has been a persistent problem\,” said Director Bill Lacy. “For the third episode of ‘A Conversation on Race\,’ we will discuss the color barrier in baseball and the courageous men who broke through. Bob Kendrick is the ideal guest to explore this topic and we look forward to what will be a fascinating and insightful evening.” \nThe program will explore the factors that made Major League Baseball a flashpoint for civil rights in 1947\, more than a decade before the marches and rallies of the 1960s. The event streams the day before Jackie Robinson Day\, in which all Major League Baseball players wear jerseys with his number “42.” This program will discuss the man who became the focus of a nation as he walked on the field as the first professional black athlete in the U.S. to shatter the color barrier. \nBob Kendrick was named President of the NLBM in March of 2011. Kendrick has been responsible for the creation of several signature museum educational programs and events including the Hall of Game\, which annually honors former MLB greats who played the game in the spirit and signature style of the Negro Leagues. Kendrick has become one of the leading authorities on the topic of Negro Leagues Baseball history and its connection to issues relating to sports\, race\, and diversity. \nDarryl Monroe graduated from Lawrence High School in 1990 and went on to play baseball at KU from 1991-1994 where he was a member of the 1993 College World Series team. He was drafted in the 9th round by the Detroit Tigers in 1994 and played 4 years of minor league baseball with the Tigers and the Independent Minor Leagues. Monroe started scouting with the Montreal Expos in 1998\, then worked in the scouting department and the player development department with the Atlanta Braves for 4 years starting in 2000. He has been working in the scouting department with the New York Yankees from 2007 till the present.

DESCRIPTION:Author Robert Blaemire will share insights from his book\, a biography of Senator Birch Bayh. Bayh served the people of Indiana for over 25 years and sponsored landmark legislation throughout his career\, including the Bayh-Dole Act. The bill\, co-sponsored with Senator Bob Dole\, changed the way inventions created through federal research and development could be licensed by the private sector. \nRobert Blaemire has been an active participant in politics all of his adult life. Born and raised in Indiana\, his career began at the age of 18 upon entering George Washington University. His employment with Senator Birch Bayh (D-IN) began in 1967 during Bob’s freshman year and concluded with Bayh’s unsuccessful re-election campaign in 1980. In 1991\, Bob created Blaemire Communications\, a political computer services firm serving Democratic campaigns\, progressive organizations\, and political consultants. \n \n

But just how historically accurate is Hamilton? And how is the show itself making history? Our guests examine what the musical got right\, what it got wrong\, and why it matters. \nClaire Bond Potter is Professor of History at The New School for Social Research\, New York\, NY\, and co-Executive Editor of Public Seminar\, a digital journal of ideas and culture aimed at a general audience. Her writing has appeared in general audience publications such The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Jacobin\, The Bulwark\, and Dissent. \nRenee C. Romano is the Robert S. Danforth Professor of History and Professor of Comparative American Studies and Africana Studies at Oberlin College in Ohio. A specialist in twentieth and twenty-first century American cultural and political history and in the field of historical memory\, she is the author of Racial Reckoning; Reopening America’s Civil Rights Trials and Race Mixing: Black-White Marriage in Postwar America.
