Former Dole staffers Robert Lighthizer\, Sheila Burke\, and Rod DeArment will discuss the Senator’s formative leadership during the Reagan era through his retirement from the US Senate in 1996. How did Dole influence U.S. fiscal and economic policy? What policy concerns shaped his political platform during his presidential runs in 1988 and 1996? Which of his policies and leadership lessons are most relevant today? \n  \nAbout the Dole Lecture\nEach spring\, the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics commemorates the date on which Senator Bob Dole was critically wounded while serving in Italy during World War II. To honor Senator Dole’s courageous recovery and commitment to serve the nation\, we welcome a guest to the Institute who embodies the commitments that Senator Dole held throughout his career in public service. \n  \n\n  \nSheila Burke served as Chief of Staff to Senator Bob Dole from 1985 to 1996 in his capacity as Senate Republican Leader. She was previously a staffer on the Senate Finance Committee\, including as a professional staff member and as Deputy Staff Director. Burke later went on to serve as Executive Dean of the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government\, and remains an adjunct lecturer in public policy. She also served as the Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer of the Smithsonian Institution. \nRod DeArment served as Chief of Staff to Senator Bob Dole from 1985 to 1986 in his capacity as Senate Republican Leader. From 1979 to 1985\, he served as Chief Counsel and Staff Director and Deputy Staff Director to the Senate Finance Committee\, which Dole chaired. DeArment later served as Deputy Secretary of Labor for President George H.W. Bush\, and was a partner at Covington & Burling.  \nRobert Lighthizer served as Chief of Staff of the Senate Finance Committee from 1978 to 1983\, including while Senator Bob Dole chaired the committee. Most recently\, he served as the United States Trade Representative from 2017 to 2021. Ambassador Lighthizer is also the author of No Trade is Free: Changing Course\, Taking on China\, and Helping America’s Workers.

DESCRIPTION:“Before it was history\, it was news\,” reflects Kansas-raised journalist\, network news anchor\, producer\, and rancher Bill Kurtis. \nJoin acclaimed journalist Bill Kurtis in conversation with Dole Institute Director Audrey Coleman for a lively discussion of his Kansas roots and the news that shaped the nation over the course of 7 decades in journalism. \n  \n \nSpecial thanks to the Dole Lecture media partner Kansas Public Radio. \n  \n\n  \nAbout Bill Kurtis\nBill Kurtis began his journalism career at WIBW-TV in Topeka\, Kansas. After his 24-hour coverage of a devastating tornado in 1966\, Kurtis was hired by Chicago’s WBBM-TV\, where he was a field reporter and later anchor of The Channel Two News. \nIn 1978\, Kurtis’ investigative unit was one of the first to report on the dangerous effects of the Agent Orange chemical on American forces in Vietnam. While covering the story\, he returned to Vietnam in 1980 to find the children of American servicemen living in the streets of Saigon with their mothers\, who were unable to find work. Kurtis’ reporting became a cover story in the New York Times Magazine and resulted in legislation that allowed these children immediate access to the United States. Additionally\, his reporting launched massive studies into the post-war lives of American servicemen to make exposure to Agent Orange treatable—establishing a new standard of care for veterans that continues to evolve in the modern day. \nIn 1982\, Kurtis joined the CBS Morning News as a co-anchor alongside Diane Sawyer\, later returning to WBBM-TV in 1985 as anchorman through 1996 and from 2010 to 2013 alongside Walter Jacobson. \nAfter a 30-year run with CBS\, he established Kurtis Productions\, which produces non-fiction programs and documentaries. Additionally\, he serves as the Official Judge and Scorekeeper on National Public Radio’s news quiz show\, Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!\, and has narrated multiple motion pictures\, including the Anchorman films starring Will Ferrell. \nKurtis was born in Florida and raised in Independence\, Kansas\, after his father retired from the U.S. Marine Corps. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism\, and from Washburn University School of Law with a Juris Doctorate. In addition to his work in journalism\, Kurtis is an active conservationist in Kansas. Kurtis has placed land in the Red Buffalo Ranch\, originally 8\,000 acres of prairie in Chautauqua County\, in conservation easements and has sold much of the land to cattlemen and the Delaware Indian Tribe. His daughter\, Mary Kristin Kurtis\, now owns the remainder of the ranch and the Red Buffalo Gift Shop in Sedan\, Kansas. \n  \nAbout the Dole Lecture\nEach spring\, the Robert J. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Dole Lecture will be held at the Institute on April 25 at 7 p.m. This year’s special guest speakers will be Senators Trent Lott and Tom Daschle. \nSenators Lott and Daschle were longtime colleagues of Senator Bob Dole. Collectively the three represent 28 years of service as Minority or Majority Leader in the United States Senate. Senators Daschle and Lott were central figures in an era of bipartisan cooperation that yielded many impactful pieces of legislation that continue to shape American society. All three Senators have been involved with the Bipartisan Policy Center\, an institution Senators Dole and Daschle helped found and where Senator Lott serves as a Senior Fellow. \nPresented each spring\, the Dole Lecture commemorates the date when Bob Dole was critically wounded while serving in Italy during World War II. The Dole Lecture honors Dole’s courageous recovery and commitment to serve the nation. \nSen. Trent Lott represented the people of Mississippi in Congress for 35 years and is one of a handful of officials to have held elected leadership positions in both the House of Representatives and Senate. During his 16 years in the House and 19 years in the Senate\, he worked closely with seven presidential administrations and was regarded as a savvy coalition builder and dealmaker. Fifth Congressional District. From 1981 to 1989\, he served as House Minority Whip\, the second-ranking Republican in the House. \nIn 1995\, Senator Lott was elected Senate Republican Whip\, giving him the distinction of being the only person to hold that position in both the House and Senate. He served as both Senate Majority and Minority Leader from 1996 to 2003. \nSen. Tom Daschle\, a BPC co-founder\, co-chairs its Commission on Political Reform and Health Project. He served as Senate minority leader from 1995 to 2001 and from 2003 to 2005\, and as the majority leader from 2001 to 2003. He is the founder and chairman of The Daschle Group\, a public policy advisory of Baker Donelson\, where he provides strategic advice on key national issues including health care\, energy\, transportation\, and the environment. \nIn 1978\, he was elected to the House of Representatives\, where he served for eight years. In 1986\, he was elected to the Senate and was chosen as Senate Democratic leader in 1994. \nAfter leaving the Senate in 2005\, Daschle joined Alston & Bird LLP as a special policy advisor and then went on to work in the same role at DLA Piper before establishing The Daschle Group in 2014. \nThis program is presented in partnership with The Bipartisan Policy Center and The Sunflower Foundation. \nThe Bipartisan Policy Center is a Washington\, DC-based think tank that actively fosters bipartisanship by combining the best ideas from both parties to promote health\, security\, and opportunity for all Americans. The Dole Lecture honors Senator Dole’s courageous recovery and continuing commitment to serve the nation. This year’s special guest speakers are Walt Riker and Clarkson Hine. Riker and Hine both served as Press Secretary for Senator Bob Dole during his historic time in the U.S. Senate and on the presidential campaign trail. Riker and Hine will discuss the evolution of the media cycle\, share their experiences crafting partisan messaging and reflect on bipartisan leadership. \nWalt Riker was the vice president of Corporate Media Relations at McDonald’s Corporation for more than 17 years and is now a freelance communications consultant. He served as Press Secretary for Senator Bob Dole from 1981-93 and was a Kansas Statehouse correspondent and reporter for WIBW in Topeka\, Kansas. Riker graduated from KU’s William Allen White School of Journalism in 1978. \nClarkson Hine is Senior Vice President – Corporate Communications & Public Affairs at Beam Suntory\, a world leader in premium spirits. He leads the company’s global communications\, brand PR and public affairs functions. Before entering business\, Clarkson served for seven years in senior communications positions on the Senate Leadership\, presidential campaign and post-election staffs of Senator Bob Dole\, including three years as Press Secretary during Dole’s high-profile tenure as both Minority and Majority Leader of the United States Senate. A native of New York City\, Clarkson is a cum laude graduate of Cornell University. \n  \nAt the program\, we will also honor the 2022 student recipients of the Robert J. DESCRIPTION:The Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas has announced that the guest for the 2021 Dole Lecture will be the Ambassador of Belgium to the United States Jean-Arthur Régibeau. This year’s lecture will take place on Wednesday\, May 5 at 7 p.m. on the institute’s YouTube channel. \n“Ambassador Régibeau is only the second seated ambassador to be a guest at the institute\,” Dole Institute Director Bill Lacy said. “As the world begins to emerge from the COVID pandemic\, he will bring a unique perspective on what lies ahead for U.S. and European relations.” \nRégibeau presented his credentials to the U.S. in Washington\, D.C. on September 17\, 2020\, and took up his duties as Ambassador. He entered the office as major transitions dominated the global political and economic landscape including the presidential administration change in the U.S. and the worldwide vaccination effort to end the pandemic. He will discuss these massive changes\, focusing on Belgium\, the European Union\, and what role the U.S. will play. \nRégibeau joined the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1998. He was the diplomatic advisor to the Minister of Defense from 1999 to 2002 and he went on to be First Secretary at the Belgian Embassy in Berlin. From 2003 to 2007\, Régibeau returned to Brussels as Head of the Private Office of the Minister of Defense. In 2007\, he was appointed Director General in charge of Multilateral Organizations at the Foreign Ministry. In this capacity\, he managed some aspects of the Belgian presidency of the EU in 2010. From 2012 to 2016\, he also was Deputy Commissioner for the commemoration of World War I. In 2016\, he became Ambassador to the Russian Federation\, Armenia\, Belarus\, and Uzbekistan. \n

We were fighting for freedom.” – Vlora Çitaku\, 2017 at the Georgetown Institute for Women\, Peace & Security \nThe Dole Institute will host Vlora Çitaku\, ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to the United States\, for the 2018 Dole Lecture. The first sitting ambassador to visit the Dole Institute\, Çitaku will discuss her career in international diplomacy and her work on behalf of the young Republic of Kosovo. The nation recently marked the 10th anniversary of its declaration of independence from Serbia on Feb. 17\, 2008. \nOnce a refugee with her sisters\, Çitaku was separated from her parents and deported by the Serbian military during the Kosovo War in 1999. She would later return following the U.S.-led air campaign in Kosovo and enter politics. She has served in the Kosovo General Assembly and as the nation’s deputy foreign minister\, acting foreign minister and consul general of the Republic of Kosovo’s mission in New York City. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the KU Center for Global and International Studies\, the KU Center for Russian\, East European and Eurasian Studies\, and the KU Office of Graduate Military Programs.

DESCRIPTION:George Mitchell is an exemplary public servant with an impressive political career. Mitchell served with Senator Dole in the Senate and was a founder of the Bipartisan Policy Center. After leaving the Senate\, he has continued to serve by seeking peace in Northern Ireland and in the Middle East and by studying the effect of doping in professional sports. \nMitchell most recently served as U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from January 2009 to May 2011. Prior to that\, he had a distinguished career in public service. He was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1980 to complete the unexpired term of Sen. Edmund S. Muskie. He was elected to a full term in the Senate in 1982 in a come-from-behind victory. Mitchell went on to a career in the Senate spanning 15 years. He left the Senate in 1995 as the Senate majority leader\, a position he had held since January 1989. \nIn 2007\, Mitchell joined fellow former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker\, Bob Dole\, and Tom Daschle to found the Bipartisan Policy Center\, a non-profit think tank that works to develop policies suitable for bipartisan support.

DESCRIPTION:Bob Woodward\, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and associate editor for the Washington Post\, was interviewed by Dole Institute of Politics Director Bill Lacy for the 2011 Dole Lecture.\nBob Woodward is regarded as one of America’s preeminent investigative reporters and non-fiction authors. He has worked for The Washington Post since 1971 as a reporter\, and is currently an associate editor of the Post. While a young reporter for The Washington Post in 1972\, Woodward was teamed up with Carl Bernstein; the two did much\, but not all\, of the original news reporting on the Watergate scandal that led to numerous government investigations and the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon. Gene Roberts\, former managing editor of The New York Times has called the work of Woodward and Bernstein “maybe the single greatest reporting effort of all time.” \nWoodward has authored or coauthored 16 non-fiction books in the last 36 years. All 16 have been national bestsellers and 12 of them have been #1 national non-fiction bestsellers – more #1 national non-fiction bestsellers than any contemporary author.

DESCRIPTION:FDIC Chair and KU alumna Sheila Bair discussed her career in public service and her efforts to restore Americans’ faith in the financial system.\nSheila C. Bair has spent most of her life in public service\, beginning with her career as a civil rights attorney in what was then the U.S. Department of Health\, Education\, and Welfare. She then went on to serve in the U.S. Department of Treasury\, the New York Stock Exchange\, and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Bair was the Research Director and Counsel to then-Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole from 1981 to 1988. Just prior to her current position\, Bair was a professor of financial regulatory policy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. \nIn 2006\, Bair was appointed Chairwomen of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) for a five-year term. Despite the current turbulent period in the financial sector\, Bair’s innovations have transformed the FDIC with programs that focus on consumer protection and economic inclusion. Bair championed the creation of the Advisory Committee on Economic Inclusion which researches small-dollar loan programs. \nFor her role as Chairwomen\, Bair was named the second most powerful woman in the world by Forbes Magazine in 2008. She was also in Time Magazine’s “Time 100” list of the most influential people of 2009. Bair has received countless awards\, including the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award and Author of the Month. Bair has written two children’s books\, Rock\, Brock\, and the Savings Shock (2006) and Isabel’s Car Wash (2008)\, which teaches children about finances. \nBair holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Kansas and a J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law. \nThe event was made possible with the generous support of Mr. & Mrs. Brian C.
