DESCRIPTION:Dr. Colleen Shogan\, former Archivist of the United States and CEO of In Pursuit\, will be recognized at the eighth Elizabeth Dole Women in Leadership Lecture. She’ll join Dole Institute Director Audrey Coleman for a discussion on her leadership experience in the nation’s leading recordkeeping and historical stewardship organizations\, the role of history in civic engagement and national identity\, and her leadership in creating an opportunity for commemoration and reflection during America250. \n  \n      \nThis program is presented in partnership with the University of Kansas Libraries and the Watkins Museum of History \n  \nAbout the Elizabeth Dole Women in Leadership Lecture\nNamed in honor of former U.S. Senator Elizabeth Hanford Dole\, the series recognizes her long-lasting career in public service by featuring women who break barriers\, make significant contributions to their field\, and reach positions of leadership. Dole held various positions throughout her career\, including serving as commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission\, Secretary of Transportation\, Secretary of Labor\, President of the American Red Cross\, and U.S. Senator representing North Carolina. After leaving office\, she founded the Elizabeth Dole Foundation\, which supports our nation’s military caregivers and their families. \n  \nAbout Colleen Shogan\nDr. Colleen J. Shogan served as the 11th Archivist of the United States\, the first woman in American history appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate to lead the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). A noted author and political scientist\, Colleen is deeply committed to civics education and prioritized sharing the records of the National Archives to a wider audience. Under her leadership\, NARA launched numerous strategic initiatives to enhance services and make its holdings more accessible\, both in-person and online\, with the goal of cultivating public participation and strengthening our nation’s democracy. \nPrior to becoming Archivist\, Colleen served in several cultural heritage leadership roles. She was Senior Vice President and Director of the David M. Rubenstein Center at the White House Historical Association\, worked in the United States Senate\, and served as a senior executive at the Library of Congress and its Congressional Research Service. She was the Vice Chair of the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission and currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Board of Directors at the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation. \nA native of the Pittsburgh area\, she holds a B.A. in Political Science from Boston College and a Ph.D. in American Politics from Yale University\, where she was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. Colleen is the 2024 recipient of the American Political Science Association’s Hubert Humphrey Award for outstanding public service. \nIn addition to her role at More Perfect\, she is also a Senior Fellow in Civics Education at Stand Together and an Adjunct Professor of Government at Georgetown University.

DESCRIPTION:Katie Sowers\, the first woman to coach on an NFL staff in a Super Bowl\, will sit for an interview at the sixth Elizabeth Dole Women in Leadership Lecture\, which features women who break barriers\, make significant contributions to their fields\, and reach positions of leadership. \nThis series is named after former U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole\, in honor of her long career in public service. Dole served as commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission\, U.S. Secretary of Transportation\, U.S. Secretary of Labor\, President of the American Red Cross\, and U.S. Senator representing the state of North Carolina. The Elizabeth Dole Women in Leadership Lecture series serves as a tribute to her dedication and contributions to the nation through her public service. \n  \nKatie Sowers is in her third year as Director of Strategic Initiatives at Ottawa University (OU). She also coached the 2021 and 2022 National Champion OU Women’s Flag Football team and now serves as the Director of Operations and Defensive Coordinator. As a result of her extensive career\, she has a large influence in the sports world and uses it to open various doors of opportunity for women’s athletics. \nShe is responsible for leading the development and fundraising efforts geared toward building a state-of-the-art facility for the women’s flag football and other OU athletic teams. Sowers continues to focus on the growth of female athletes and bringing these programs into the spotlight. \nIn the summer of 2021\, Sowers served on the coaching staff of the Kansas City Chiefs through the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship where she had the opportunity to coach alongside coach Andy Reid\, one of the most accomplished coaches in NFL history. \nBefore arriving at Ottawa\, Sowers was an offensive assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers from 2017 to 2021. She made history becoming the first female coach on an NFL staff to coach in a Super Bowl. Prior to her time with the 49ers\, Sowers was a wide receivers’ coaching intern with the Atlanta Falcons. \nA native of Hesston\, Kan.\, Sowers played football in the Women’s Football Alliance for the West Michigan Mayhem and her hometown team\, the Kansas City Titans. She was also selected to play on the USA Women’s National Football team in 2013 which won the IFAF World Championship defeating Team Canada.

Rollins Westin leads the organization’s efforts to serve vulnerable children through mass media and targeted initiatives in the United States and around the world. \nWestin has held leadership positions in media\, nonprofit\, and public service. She was Assistant to the President for Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs for President George H.W. Bush\, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development\, and held senior positions at the ABC Television Network and U.S. News & World Report. \nWestin was named a “Leading Global Thinker” by Foreign Policy Magazine\, one of Fast Company’s “100 Most Creative People in Business\,” was also recognized with the Smithsonian’s “American Ingenuity Award” and the Thomas Jefferson Medal for Citizen Leadership. A staunch advocate for addressing children’s needs\, she regularly appears on major media outlets to highlight the value of investing in early childhood development\, especially for the most vulnerable children. \n

DESCRIPTION:This year’s Elizabeth Dole Women in Leadership lecture will be given by Major General Diana M. Holland of the U.S. Army. \n“We are thrilled to have Major General Holland as our guest for this year’s Elizabeth Dole Women in Leadership lecture\,” said Director Bill Lacy. “Her distinguished and storied career with the U.S. Army is an inspiration. Her lifetime of service to this country made her a natural choice.” \nThis program is closed-captioned for the hearing impaired. \nA downloadable\, printable program for this event is available here. \nThis special program will be live-streamed to the institute’s YouTube channel and to its website\, www.doleinstitute.org. Follow the Dole Institute on Facebook\, Instagram\, or Twitter for updates regarding this and future programming. \nHolland graduated from the United States Military Academy and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers in 1990. She served in Operation Freedom’s Sentinel\, Joint Task Force Sapper\, and Task Force Diamond in Afghanistan. She also served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. As commander of the South Atlantic Division\, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, she oversaw support to disaster-stricken states following hurricanes Irma\, Maria\, Florence\, and Michael. \nIn 2015\, Holland was the first woman appointed commandant of Cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In that same year\, she was the first woman to hold the title of deputy commander of support in a light infantry division. She currently serves with the Army Corps of Engineers as the commanding general of the Mississippi Valley Division\, and as the president of the Mississippi River Commission\, both firsts for a woman in these appointments. \nHolland’s military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit\, the Bronze Star\, the Meritorious Service Medal\, Afghanistan Campaign Star\, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal\, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal\, to name a few. \n \n

Davids serves Kansas’ third legislative district and was sworn into the 116th Congress in January 2019. A graduate of Johnson County Community College\, the University of Missouri at Kansas City and Cornell Law School\, she serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure and Small Business Committees. She is one of the first two Native American women to serve in Congress\, joining Rep. Deb Haaland of New Mexico. Rep. DESCRIPTION:When Sen. Bob Dole was hospitalized at Walter Reed Hospital in 2011\, Sen. Elizabeth Dole became a firsthand witness to the hardships experienced by the caregivers to our nation’s veterans. The experience prompted her to found the Elizabeth Dole Foundation in support of military caregivers. The 2018 Elizabeth Dole Women in Leadership Lecture will focus on the frontlines of this care crisis. The panel discussion will include Meg Kabat\, national director of the Caregiver Support Program for the Department of Veteran Affairs\, and Dole Foundation caregiver fellows Robyn Loveland of Nebraska and Carolyn Tolliver-Lee of Kansas.
