DESCRIPTION:“Defending New York City in the Early Republic”\nRich Barbuto\nThursday\, March 3\, 2022 | 3 p.m.\nDuring the American Revolution\, New York City was occupied by the British. Thereafter\, the city soon became the largest port of the new republic. Threatened again as tensions with Britain reached a fevered pitch\, federal\, state\, and local authorities moved quickly to build fortifications and mobilize the citizenry to guard land and sea approaches. In 1814\, believing the city too strong to assault\, the British chose instead to attack Washington\, D.C. and Baltimore. \nRich Barbuto served as an armor officer for twenty-three years. He earned a Ph.D. from KU and was the deputy director of the Department of Military History for twelve years. Rich has written several books on the War of 1812 and is a frequent speaker at conferences and public venues.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibit: What Would a Woman Offer Her Country? Elizabeth Dole’s Ground-breaking\, Trail-blazing Life of Service\nOpening March 18\, 2022\nAfter several decades of leadership at the highest levels of U.S. government\, Elizabeth Dole asked and answered this pointed question in a 1999 speech she delivered while she contemplated a run for the U.S.presidency. The following year\, she became the first viable woman candidate from a major political party to seek our nation’s highest office. As one of just 24 women in her 1965 Harvard Law School class of 550\, Senator Dole went on to serve five U.S. presidents and became the first woman to serve in two different positions in two presidential cabinets. She was the first woman head of the American Red Cross since founder Clara Barton in 1881\, and later was elected the first woman U.S. Senator from North Carolina. In 2012\, she established the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to adress military families’ urgent support needs. It has since become the country’s preeminent organization that empowers\, supports\, and honors military and veteran caregivers. Aside from these historic firsts\, what has Senator Elizabeth Dole offered her county? This exhibit\, featuring items from her historical collections which she donated to the Dole Institute in 2017\, chronicles over six decades of people-focused leadership and policy making – all while breaking barriers and blazing trails for other women to follow in her footsteps.

SUMMARY:Dave Mills: “Bread for my Enemies: US Aid to Germany after World War 2”
DESCRIPTION:The greatest challenge to peace in Western Europe immediately after World War Two was the possibility that the people themselves would vote in Communist governments\, primarily due to hunger. This presentation will demonstrate the challenges and the extent to which the American government fed Germany and other nations for both humanitarian and anticommunist reasons between 1945 and 1948. \nDave Mills is an associate professor at the United States Army Command and General Staff College\, located at Fort Leavenworth\, Kansas\, where he teaches military history to senior Captains and Majors from each branch of the military. He holds a Ph.D from North Dakota State University\, and is the author of three books on military and Cold War history. His current research project is entitled\, Bread for My Enemies: Feeding Germany from the Fall of Hitler to the Marshall Plan. He has been married to his wife\, Ann\, for almost 30 years\, and they have three grown sons.

DESCRIPTION:On April 12 at 7 p.m.\, John Della Volpe will discuss his book “Fight: How Gen Z is channeling their fear and passion to save America.” The book covers the coming of age of the 70 million young people in America born in a 20-year period beginning in the mid-1990s. Volpe examines the political awakening of this generation that has come largely during the Trump era\, as well as what he describes as a “significant mental health crisis\,” intensified by the state of the country’s politics. Volpe\, the Harvard Institute of Politics Polling Director\, also led a town hall meeting for students at the Dole Institute in 2015. He is known as one of the world’s leading authorities on global sentiment\, opinion\, and influence\, especially among young Americans and in the age of digital and social media.

DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Dole Lecture will be held on April 14 at 7 p.m. Presented each spring\, the lecture commemorates the date when Bob Dole was critically wounded while serving in Italy during World War II. The Dole Lecture honors Senator Dole’s courageous recovery and continuing commitment to serve the nation. This year’s special guest speakers are Walt Riker and Clarkson Hine. Riker and Hine both served as Press Secretary for Senator Bob Dole during his historic time in the U.S. Senate and on the presidential campaign trail. Riker and Hine will discuss the evolution of the media cycle\, share their experiences crafting partisan messaging and reflect on bipartisan leadership. \nWalt Riker was the vice president of Corporate Media Relations at McDonald’s Corporation for more than 17 years and is now a freelance communications consultant. He served as Press Secretary for Senator Bob Dole from 1981-93 and was a Kansas Statehouse correspondent and reporter for WIBW in Topeka\, Kansas. Riker graduated from KU’s William Allen White School of Journalism in 1978. \nClarkson Hine is Senior Vice President – Corporate Communications & Public Affairs at Beam Suntory\, a world leader in premium spirits. He leads the company’s global communications\, brand PR and public affairs functions. Before entering business\, Clarkson served for seven years in senior communications positions on the Senate Leadership\, presidential campaign and post-election staffs of Senator Bob Dole\, including three years as Press Secretary during Dole’s high-profile tenure as both Minority and Majority Leader of the United States Senate. A native of New York City\, Clarkson is a cum laude graduate of Cornell University. \n  \nAt the program\, we will also honor the 2022 student recipients of the Robert J. DESCRIPTION:Defense analysts have identified the emergence of “hybrid warfare” as a compelling threat to American national security and declared it one of the more notable developments of the first decade of the 21st century. Of course\, while the label may be new\, hybrid warfare is not new in the human experience. This talk will discuss Union operations in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864\, using it as a case study of a specific campaign in the Civil War where both conventional and unconventional operations were significant factors. It examines Sheridan’s efforts\, the particular dynamics and challenges he confronted\, and the factors that enabled him to prevail. \n

This is her story of love\, loss\, waiting – and action. \nKathleen Johnson of Salina\, Kansas was a founding member of the National League of Families of Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia. These brave military wives from across the country spoke out\, against government policy\, to seek recognition\, answers\, and accounting for their prisoner of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA) husbands during Vietnam. Some national leaders\, including Senator Bob Dole\, became fervent advocates for them in the halls of the U.S. government. \nThis special exhibit is made possible by ITC Great Plains. \n

SUMMARY:From Dependents to Interdependence: The Army Officer's Wife Ideal and the Making of Army Family Policy
DESCRIPTION:Historian Mary McMurray will contextualize the activism of POW/MIA wives with the changing roles and expectations of the Army wife in the 20th century. Using military guidebooks and other sources directed at military spouses\, Mary places Army spouses at the center of systemic changes in the Army. Her presentation\, followed by audience Q&A\, will cover the period from the beginning of World War II\, with the old saying\, “if the Army wanted you to have a wife\, they would have issued you one\,” to 1983\, with the release of the Army Family White Paper that called for policies and practices to support the interdependence of families and the military. \nMary McMurray is the Director of the Johnson County Museum\, which just earned national accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. Mary holds degrees in history from MU (Bachelors)\, UMKC (Masters)\, and KU (Doctorate). She is passionate about civic engagement and using lessons from the past to inspire\, empower\, and embolden people to make a brighter future. SUMMARY:Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine: planning\, operations\, and prospects
DESCRIPTION:On February 24\, 2022\, Russia began a war on Ukraine\, unleashing brutality on the European continent not seen since 1945. On June 28\, two scholars of war; Kevin Benson\, Ph.D.\, Colonel\, US Army (ret)\, and Prof. Chris Marsh\, Ph.D.\, Joint Special Operations University\, will assess the Russia-Ukraine war to date and offer their projections on how the war will progress. \nKevin Benson graduated from West Point in 1977 and served in the US Army for 30 years\, retiring in the rank of colonel. He commanded soldiers\, served as the lead planner for the 2003 invasion of Iraq\, and concluded his career as the Director of the School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth\, KS. He earned a PhD in American history from KU in 2011 and was also a Dole Fellow in 2011. \nDr. Marsh is Director of the Department of Strategic Research & Analysis at the Joint Special Operations University (JSOU)\, USSOCOM. He also serves as editor of the Special Operations Journal. Prior to joining JSOU\, Marsh taught at the U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) and Baylor University. He was also an intelligence analyst at the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command. Dr. Marsh is an expert on irregular warfare and Russian & East European studies\, having lived and conducted research throughout the region for over 25 years. DESCRIPTION:Many Kansans are familiar with the Bleeding Kansas era of American history in context of American westward expansion. Few\, however\, may know of a comparable event of British eastward expansion that occurred in modern day South Africa (British Kaffraria) during the 1850s.  Dr. Mullis’s presentation assesses select American and British political and military approaches to expansion during the 1850s to identify “common” Western strategic approaches and legacies. \nDr. Mullis is currently a professor of military history at the Redstone Arsenal satellite campus of the US Army Command and General Staff College.  He received his PhD in History from the University of Kansas and is the author of Peacekeeping on the Plains: Army Operations in Bleeding Kansas. \nPlease note this program is Virtual only

SUMMARY:Fort Leavenworth: Angela Riotto and Derek Mallett: “Prisoners of War as Military Intelligence in the Civil War and World War 2"
DESCRIPTION:During the Second World War\, the US military interrogated over 3\,000 German Prisoners of War at a secret facility at Fort Hunt\, Virginia. These interrogations offer fascinating perspectives of the German situation in the final year of the war and allow us to evaluate how well American authorities knew its enemy at the time. \nDerek Mallett is currently an associate professor in the Department of Military History at the US Army Command and General Staff College\, Fort Belvoir\, Virginia satellite campus. His research interests include the Second World War\, prisoners of war\, military intelligence\, war and public memory\, and national security. \nAngela Riotto received her Ph.D. from the University of Akron. Her research examines the ways in which both U.S. and Confederate former prisoners of war discussed their captivity between 1861 and 1930. She currently teaches with the Department of Military History at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College as an Assistant Professor.

Neil has polled for four Presidential campaigns – Senator Robert Dole\, President George W. Bush\, Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and he was the lead pollster for Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign. \n  \nThe Kansas Picture\nSeptember 28\, 2022 \n \nKansas shook the nation’s political landscape once already this year with an abortion referendum\, which only set the stage for a big midterm in which both parties have much at state in the state. \nWith former Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer and former Rep. Jim Slattery. \nGovernor Jeff Colyer\, M.D. is the longest serving Lt. Governor in Kansas history and the 47th Governor. He made Kansas the first state to privatize its entire Medicaid Program into Kancare saving $2.5billion\, expanded services and is the basis of many other states programs. A surgeon known for volunteering in 25 war zones from Rwanda to Syria\, he provides trauma reconstruction in Kansas City. He advises companies and investment firms in the US and abroad. Originally from Hays\, Governor Colyer has degrees from Georgetown\, Cambridge University and KU Med. \nJim Slattery served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives\, representing the second district of Kansas. He was a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee during his entire 12-year tenure in Congress. Slattery is currently President of Slattery Strategy LLC\, a consulting firm located in McLean\, Virginia. He started this firm in October 2019 after completing a 24-year career with Wiley Rein\, LLP a prominent Washington D.C. law firm. Slattery was also the 1994 Democrat nominee for Governor in Kansas and the 2008 Democrat nominee for the U.S. Senate. \n  \nElection Integrity\nOctober 19\, 2022 \n \nWith debates raging over voting rules and restrictions\, as well as over the outcome of the 2020 presidential election\, will Americans see this year’s results as fair? Will they feel they had full voting rights? And what does that portend for the 2024 presidential election? Democracy itself is on the ballot this year. \nWith Sean Morales-Doyle\, director\, voting rights and democracy at the Brennan Center for Justice. \nSean Morales-Doyle serves as the director in the Voting Rights Program\, where he focuses on voting rights and elections. He advocates for pro-voter reforms like automatic voter registration and voting rights restoration while fighting back against voter suppression efforts in the courts. DESCRIPTION:The Dole Institute of Politics will honor Juan Manuel Santos\, former President of Colombia with the 2022 Dole Leadership Prize. \nThe Dole Leadership Prize is a bipartisan award presented annually to an individual who demonstrates the importance of involvement in political and civic affairs. Santos was identified for recognition by the late Senator Bob Dole in honor of his successful efforts to bring peace to Colombia. \n“We are honored to welcome President Santos back to the Dole Institute to present him with the 2022 Dole Leadership Prize\,” said Dole Institute director Audrey Coleman. The President’s 2012 visit marked the first time the Dole Institute hosted a sitting head of state. \nSantos graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Economics and Administration and completed post-graduate studies at the London School of Economics and Harvard University. \nHe served two terms as President of Colombia from 2010-2018\, with one of the cornerstones of his administration being his work on a peace process with FARC\, the Colombian guerilla organization. As a result of his commitment to achieve peace in Colombia\, he was the sole recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016 for “his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end\,” according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. \nThe program will take place at the Dole Institute of Politics at 7 p.m. on September 20. A book sale and signing will take place after the program. Attendees can purchase the English translation of Santos’ book\, The Battle for Peace: The Long Road to Ending a War with the World’s Oldest Guerrilla Army\, published by the University Press of Kansas.

He is chair of the firm’s Supreme Court and appellate litigation practice and managing partner of the Washington office. Kannon is widely recognized as one of the nation’s top appellate litigators. He has argued 34 cases before the Supreme Court. In all\, he has argued over 100 appeals in courts across the country including arguments in all thirteen federal courts of appeals in numerous state courts. Prior to private practice\, Kannon served as an Assistant to the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice. He also served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and to Judge J. Michael Luttig of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. \nPaul Davis \nPaul Davis is a graduate of the University of Kansas and the Washburn University School of Law. He practices law with the Paul Davis Law Firm\, LLC here in Lawrence and with the Topeka law firm of Frieden & Forbes\, LLP.  Davis is a lifelong resident of Lawrence and served in the Kansas House of Representatives from 2003-2015. He served as the House Minority Leader from 2009-2015\, where he developed a reputation for building bi-partisan coalitions on numerous issues. In 2014\, Davis was the Democratic candidate for Kansas Governor where he was endorsed by over 100 current and former Republican elected officials. Davis ran for the United States Congress in 2018 where he lost by less than one percent in a district that President Trump carried by 19 points in 2016. Davis has been involved in numerous local\, statewide\, and national organizations\, and currently serves as the Co-Chair of Economic Lifelines\, which is a statewide transportation advocacy organization. \nRyan Kriegshauser  \nRyan Kriegshauser is a partner at the Kriegshauser Ney Law Group. Mr. Kriegshauser has been involved in numerous Kansas election law\, campaign finance\, and high-profile constitutional cases. Previously\, Mr. Kriegshauser served as General Counsel at the Office of the Kansas Securities Commissioner and\, prior\, served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Office of Legal Counsel and Policy in Kansas. Before entering public service\, Mr. Kriegshauser practiced law in Kansas City\, primarily focusing in the areas of complex commercial litigation\, securities\, and constitutional rights. Mr. Kriegshauser has written scholarly articles on property rights and taught continuing legal education in Kansas.  Mr. Kriegshauser spent two years working in Washington\, DC\, both on and off Capitol Hill. He holds a B.A. and a J.D.\, graduating from Georgetown University and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Mr. Kriegshauser also currently serves in the Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander. \nLumen Mulligan (Moderator) \nEarl B. Shurtz Research Professor of Law University of Kansas School of Law \nLumen “Lou” Mulligan joined the KU Law faculty in 2010\, where he teaches predominantly civil litigation courses. In the ensuing years\, KU Law students have recognized Lumen for his teaching several times\, including awarding him the Dean Frederick J. Moreau teaching and mentoring award\, selecting him to serve as their graduation hooder\, and as their commencement marshal. He was named as an Earl B. Shurtz Research Professor in 2019. \nLumen has authored or co-authored four books and treatises on jurisdiction and procedure. He publishes in prominent legal journals as well\, including articles in the Michigan\, NYU\, Northwestern University\, Washington University\, UCLA\, and Vanderbilt Law Reviews.  State and federal courts at all levels cite Lumen’s scholarship regularly.  He served as a visiting professor at the University of Aberdeen\, Scotland in 2014. \nLumen oversees KU Law’s Medical-Legal Partnerships\, which aid low-income clients and provide law students with field placement experiences\, at both Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the KU Hospital in Kansas City.  He formerly served as the director of the Shook\, Hardy & Bacon Center for Excellence in     Advocacy. He also served as associate dean for faculty from 2016 to 2019. \nIn addition to his duties at KU Law\, Lumen served\, or continues to serve\, on the Kansas Judicial Council – Civil Rules Advisory Committee\, the executive committee of the appellate section of the Kansas Bar Association\, the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeal Criminal Justice Act Panel\, the board of directors for      Kansas Legal Services\, and the Kansas Court of Appeals Mediation Study committee. SUMMARY:Fort Leavenworth: Gates Brown: “Implications of the Korean War on US Policy”
DESCRIPTION:The Korean War\, often described as the Forgotten War\, was foundational to the creation of the national defense posture that the United States maintained throughout the Cold War. After World War II\, the Truman administration quickly demobilized much of the U.S. military in an effort to return to normalcy and get the United States economy on a peacetime footing. This was similar to previous post-war periods in the United States\, where the large military force quickly returned to its peacetime form\, which was a fraction of the wartime size. This talk will discuss the implications of the Korean War both domestically and internationally. To meet this conflict\, the Truman administration restarted conscription to meet the force needs to fight the war and imposed domestic economic controls\, although to a lesser degree than those used in World War II. Internationally\, the Korean War served as a catalyst for the increase of the US military contribution to the recently created North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It also established the military character of the Cold War\, that the main kinetic aspects of the conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States would be in proxy wars while the nuclear deterrent maintained a tense status quo between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. \nGates Brown is currently an associate professor in the Department of Military History at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He received his PhD from the University of Kansas. His research interests include the early Cold War and the evolution of U.S. nuclear strategy in the late 1940s and 1950s.

DESCRIPTION:Come sit\, stay\, and play as we kick off our NEW family-friendly activities featuring the Dole family’s first schnauzer\, Leader! Make your own Leader headband\, learn about wacky political pets\, and help tell the story of Leader the dog. \nThe fun begins October 14 and runs through October 23 during museum hours Tuesday – Sunday\, 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. \nWe can’t wait to see you at this paw-some event!
