SUMMARY:Dole & Dr. K: A Story of Loss and Recovery Turned Advocacy for Armenia
DESCRIPTION:This special exhibit will be closing on February 1\, 2026\, to prepare for a new special exhibit. Make plans to visit the Dole Institute’s Museum & Galleries\, open Tuesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.\, by visiting our website. \n\nCan’t make it to see this exhibit? View the online exhibit on Dole Collections Online → \n\nA young Bob Dole\, searching for a fuller recovery from grave World War II injuries\, connected with Armenian surgeon Dr. Hampar Kelikian. Over the course of seven surgeries in seven years\, “Dr. K” shared his story of loss and renewal around the 1915 Armenian Genocide—inspiring Dole as he worked to reimagine his future and build a new life. \nKelikian’s lessons resonated with Dole in the decades following as he entered public service. Throughout his time in the U.S. Senate\, Dole championed Armenia\, including calling for official recognition of the Armenian Genocide – despite long odds and competing national interests. \nThis exhibit is based on the research of Michael Bobelian\, who served as the Dole Archives Fellow for Armenian Advocacy in 2018. Mr. Bobelian is the author of “Children of Armenia: A Forgotten Genocide and the Century-Long Struggle for Justice.”

SUMMARY:ERA in the Heartland: Ratification and Reconsideration in Kansas\, 1973-1980
DESCRIPTION:Experience ERA in the Heartland before the exhibit closes this month! The last day to visit this exhibit is March 9. Plan your visit to the Dole Institute’s Museum & Galleries by visiting our website.\nIn the early 1970s states raced to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment after it was passed in Congress. It seemed inevitable that the legislation\, granting equal rights to men and women\, would become the 27th amendment to the United States Constitution. Grassroots movements – for and against the amendment – mobilized swiftly in response. Highlighting the voices of ordinary Kansans\, this exhibit explores the dialogue surrounding the adoption of the ERA in our state and its legacy today. \nThis exhibit is based on University of Kansas history and journalism student Alexandra Haggar’s Honors thesis: “Rescind ERA: The Failed Efforts in Kansas to Rescind Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment\, 1973-1980.” \n  \n \nThis exhibit is presented in partnership with the KU Department of History and with special thanks to Dr. Marie Grace Brown. \nThis exhibit features materials from the Kenneth Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas.

SUMMARY:September 11\, 2001: The Day that Changed the World
DESCRIPTION:On display from September 5-17\, 2023 at the Dole Institute of Politics \nThe Dole Institute will have special hours on Monday\, September 11\, 2023. We will be open from 12 pm – 4 pm. \nThe Dole Institute of Politics will be displaying a special poster exhibit commemorating the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. “September 11: The Day that Changed the World” reviews the events of the day\, highlights personal experiences\, and invites reflections from all patrons. This exhibit was developed by the 9/11 Memorial Museum with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nGuests can also view our permanent memorial in Hansen Hall\, featuring original beams from World Trade Center Tower One. These beams were salvaged and presented to the Dole Institute by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in appreciation for Senator Dole’s work with former President Bill Clinton to develop the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund\, which helped fund the education for children of 9/11 victims.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Missing\, Then Action: An Army Wife Speaks out
DESCRIPTION:In June 1965\, Kansan Kathleen Johnson received word that her husband\, U.S. Army Major Bruce Johnson was missing. \nFor four years\, she waited—then\, she sought answers for her three young children. This is her story of love\, loss\, waiting – and action. \nKathleen Johnson of Salina\, Kansas was a founding member of the National League of Families of Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia. These brave military wives from across the country spoke out\, against government policy\, to seek recognition\, answers\, and accounting for their prisoner of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA) husbands during Vietnam. Some national leaders\, including Senator Bob Dole\, became fervent advocates for them in the halls of the U.S. government. \nThis special exhibit is made possible by ITC Great Plains. \n

DESCRIPTION:Exhibit: What Would a Woman Offer Her Country? Elizabeth Dole’s Ground-breaking\, Trail-blazing Life of Service\nOpening March 18\, 2022\nAfter several decades of leadership at the highest levels of U.S. government\, Elizabeth Dole asked and answered this pointed question in a 1999 speech she delivered while she contemplated a run for the U.S.presidency. The following year\, she became the first viable woman candidate from a major political party to seek our nation’s highest office. As one of just 24 women in her 1965 Harvard Law School class of 550\, Senator Dole went on to serve five U.S. presidents and became the first woman to serve in two different positions in two presidential cabinets. She was the first woman head of the American Red Cross since founder Clara Barton in 1881\, and later was elected the first woman U.S. Senator from North Carolina. In 2012\, she established the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to adress military families’ urgent support needs. It has since become the country’s preeminent organization that empowers\, supports\, and honors military and veteran caregivers. Aside from these historic firsts\, what has Senator Elizabeth Dole offered her county? This exhibit\, featuring items from her historical collections which she donated to the Dole Institute in 2017\, chronicles over six decades of people-focused leadership and policy making – all while breaking barriers and blazing trails for other women to follow in her footsteps.
