POINTS OF PRIDE
SUMMER 2024

Throughout the summer season, the Dole Institute thrived as a hub for summer tourism, contemporary and historical discourse, and learning opportunities for the next generation of leaders.

Admiral Robert Bauer, Chair of the NATO Military Committee, speaks with Dole Institute Visiting Fellow Jerry Seib about the future of NATO in a new era of collective defense.

Looking to the Past to Inform the Future

In early June, the Dole Institute hosted Admiral Robert Bauer (Royal Netherlands Navy) on behalf of the Office of the Chancellor and the University of Kansas as part of his recent tour of the United States. The Institute partnered with KU Graduate Military Studies, the Truman Library Institute, and the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Foundation to make his visit possible.

In his discussion with Jerry Seib, Dole Institute Visiting Fellow and former Washington Executive Editor of the Wall Street Journal, Admiral Bauer spoke about the future of NATO in a new era of collective defense. The pair specifically touched on the state of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the politics of continuing to support those fighting our adversaries and international organizations like NATO, and more.

Cultivating the Next Generation of Leaders

Annually, the Dole Institute invites rising high school seniors from throughout Kansas to Lawrence for its flagship Youth Civic Leadership Institute. The three-day camp focuses on the importance of civic engagement in our democracy, especially as future young voters. Students are nominated by teachers, principals, and guidance counselors to attend. This year, 33 high schools from throughout Kansas were represented, and 36 of the state’s 105 counties were represented.

Organized by Associate Director Barbara Ballard, participants learned about how they can be civically engaged at their age, experiences of bring in representative government, qualities of leadership, and much more. The program also included a visit to the Kansas State Capitol and a dinner with members of the Lawrence community.

Showcasing Meaningful Stories

Throughout the summer, the Dole Institute’s Museum & Galleries were open to the public. As part of the Institute’s partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate on the Bolstering Elections initiative, the Institute opened a new special exhibit, “Election Administrators/Election Designers.” The exhibit offers a glimpse into the lives of election administrators to tell the story of how an election is designed and conducted in communities throughout the United States. It joins “ERA in the Heartland: Ratification and Reconsideration in Kansas, 1973-1980,” the Institute’s additional special exhibit on display in the Elizabeth Dole Gallery & Reading Room.

Additionally, the Dole Institute participated in Travel Kansas’ Sunflower Summer and Explore Lawrence’s Summer of Fun initiatives, which showcase local and statewide attractions for families of all ages to visit during the summer season.
