Bring Your Own Chair

October 4, 2021 - January 30, 2022

“If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”
-Shirley Chisholm

The Bring Your Own Chair project is inspired by Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s words and lifetime of work to promote a more inclusive democracy. Chisholm was the first black woman elected to Congress in 1968 and the first black candidate to run for the presidential nomination of a majority party. Chisholm was a force for change and a champion of legislation that would improve the quality of life for women, children, people of color, and the poor.

What matters to you? What do you bring to the table?

Design a chair for the installation celebrating our democracy’s diverse perspectives. An activity for all ages.

This interactive installation was created in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate.
