The Dole Institute Student Advisory Board (SAB) is the official student group of the Institute—a dynamic, student-led organization at KU that unites individuals passionate about community service, government, and politics.
Dedicated to fostering civic involvement, we emphasize the importance of voting and political engagement while creating an inclusive space for open dialogue. Working closely with the Dole Institute staff, SAB members help plan events and invite influential speakers, offering a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills and actively shape the future of political discourse.
Here is our list of the top ten reasons why KU students should get involved with the Dole Institute through the Student Advisory Board.
The Dole Institute’s mission is to promote a new era of leadership that uses politics to bring people together through opportunities that emphasize bipartisan cooperation, public service, and civic education and engagement—all inspired by the leadership and service of Senators Bob and Elizabeth Dole and the enduring civic contributions of the Greatest Generation. Our programs are designed to highlight perspectives from both Democrats and Republicans, ensuring a well-rounded and respectful discussion of important issues.
The 2025 Student Advisory Board program, “The State of Education in Kansas,” featured Kansas State Sen. Doug Shane (R-Louisburg), Kansas State Rep. Mari-Lynn Poskin (D-Leawood), and Brett Parker of the KNEA (not pictured) for a discussion on public education funding, school choice, and more.
While Senator Bob Dole himself had his political affiliation, the Dole Institute is a welcoming space for all—regardless of party or background—who are interested in politics and civic engagement. Prospective students should feel encouraged, not intimidated, to join our conversations knowing that we value diverse viewpoints, open dialogue, and mutual respect in every discussion we host.

One of the most exciting benefits of joining the Dole Institute’s Student Advisory Board is the unparalleled access to high-profile guest speakers who are leaders in their fields. Every semester, the Institute curates a dynamic lineup of programs featuring influential figures. Imagine attending events where you hear firsthand insights from luminaries such as President Bill Clinton, Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, groundbreaking NFL Super Bowl coach Katie Sowers, and Representative Sharice Davids, among many others.
As a member of the SAB, you’ll have the unique chance to interact with these remarkable individuals in more intimate settings while volunteering at programs. These experiences not only broaden your perspective but also open doors to mentorship and networking opportunities that can shape your academic and professional journey.
One of the most enticing benefits of joining the Dole Institute’s Student Advisory Board is the access to a series of student-only events that perfectly blend intellectual engagement with a foodie twist. With each event carefully curated by our student workers and SAB Coordinator, you’re not just attending a program, you’re joining a vibrant community where the topics matter, the guest speakers are chosen by students, and free food is always on the menu.

Kicking off the fall semester, “Party on the Patio” is our casual, outdoor recruitment event that welcomes new students with open arms and an even fuller plate. Before the event begins, a delectable food buffet is laid out, and afterward, attendees can indulge in a refreshing cold treat. Past festivities have featured crowd-pleasers like tacos paired with the iconic Dole pineapple whip, setting the tone for a semester of exciting possibilities.
Throughout the academic year, Fridays take on a special flavor with our “Pizza and Politics” lunchtime events, typically hosted at the Kansas Memorial Union. This recurring event, expertly organized by our Pizza and Politics Coordinator, offers a relaxed setting where influential guest speakers discuss a wide range of topics. And of course, every session is accompanied by complimentary pizza, ensuring that students are fed both intellectually and literally.
As the spring semester unfolds, “Brinner” adds a unique twist by turning the traditional dinner on its head: serving breakfast for dinner. Similar to Partio, the event welcomes back new students and familiar faces from the winter break with a delicious meal and an engaging conversation.
Before the academic year concludes, the Student Advisory Board hosts an annual banquet exclusively for its active members. This catered event is more than just a dinner—it’s a celebration of the year’s accomplishments. Amidst delicious food, attendees reflect on shared experiences, enjoy heartfelt speeches, and celebrate with awards that honor outstanding contributions. It’s an evening that encapsulates the spirit of camaraderie and achievement, leaving lasting memories and new connections.
As an active member of the Student Advisory Board, you gain exclusive access to a series of dinners and receptions that provide the perfect setting to network with distinguished guests and fellow SAB members. Evening programs often begin with a pre-event reception, where you’ll enjoy a selection of delicious cuisine while engaging in lively conversations with influential speakers and peers.

Throughout the academic year, the Dole Institute hosts a variety of relaxed “Discussion Groups” designed to foster insightful dialogue in a laid-back environment. These sessions feature a range of snacks and light refreshments, setting the stage for open discussions on current and thought-provoking topics. Frequent attendees of these groups may be specially invited to an exclusive student dinner at a local Lawrence restaurant. This complimentary meal offers a unique opportunity to connect with the season’s Dole Fellow and high-profile guests in an intimate, off-the-record setting—allowing you to ask all your burning questions while also enjoying the rich flavors of Lawrence’s local culinary options.
Membership with the Student Advisory Board opens the door to many networking experiences that extend far beyond the classroom. You’ll have the chance to connect with influential guest speakers, community leaders, and industry experts in an environment that fosters authentic conversations and long-term relationships.
By participating in exclusive events such as receptions, Discussion Groups, and dinners, you’ll engage directly with professionals who have shaped policy, industry, and cultural trends. Additionally, you’ll meet and collaborate with like-minded peers who are equally passionate about driving change and making a positive impact in our community. The SAB typically has 4 meetings a semester, as well as student events focused on socializing and community service. At these events, students can interact with other members, make new friends, and create a community here at the Dole Institute.
Students met former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at a reception ahead of a program on developing U.S.-China relations in the fall of 2024. At each of our receptions, dinners, and events students have the opportunity to meet and network with industry professionals.
Every event is carefully designed to create a dynamic platform where ideas flow, experiences are shared, and meaningful connections are forged—setting the stage for both your personal growth and professional success.
As a Student Advisory Board member, you gain preferred eligibility to the Institute’s Lacy Internship Assistance Program—an internship assistance fund designed to support the career ambitions of Jayhawks. The award helps offset travel and living expenses for internships in public service, politics, museum and archival studies, and related fields. With this financial support, you can focus on gaining hands-on experience and building your professional network, paving the way for future success. It’s just one of the many ways the Dole Institute invests in the growth and development of the next generation of leaders.
The Dole Institute is proud to support students in their career development through our Lacy Internship Assistance Program. We have supported students in opportunities all across the world, including interning for the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C.
Toward the end of each academic year, the Dole Institute proudly recognizes a select group of students for their outstanding contributions and unwavering dedication to the Student Advisory Board, public service, and community service. These awards not only celebrate hard work and commitment but also serve as a testament to the impact students have on advancing public service and leadership.
Some honors, such as the Robert J. Dole Service to Country Award, Elizabeth Dole Public Service Award, and Noah Hookstra Memorial Award, go beyond recognition—they offer both a competitive application process and valuable scholarship benefits. These awards acknowledge exceptional public service and leadership, providing recipients with both financial support and the honor of joining an esteemed legacy.

Other accolades, including Special Achievement Awards and Director’s Awards, are bestowed based on a student’s involvement and contributions throughout the year. Without a formal application process, these honors are awarded as a direct acknowledgment of the student’s efforts, dedication, and positive impact on the advisory board’s initiatives.
Being a part of the Student Advisory Board isn’t just about professional development, it’s also about building lasting friendships and a strong community. SAB social events are designed to be enjoyable, relaxed gatherings that help you connect with your peers outside of the usual academic and professional settings.

Being a SAB member opens doors to transformative travel experiences that take you beyond the classroom and into the heart of national conversations. These trips provide a unique blend of education, networking, and hands-on exposure to real-world policy and journalism.
Over the years, SAB seniors joined Dole Institute staffers on trips to Washington, D.C., giving a few of the organization’s most active members the chance to explore the nation’s political epicenter. This immersive journey allows you to experience firsthand the workings of government, connect with influential leaders, and deepen your understanding of national policy.

This year, select SAB members had the privilege of representing the University of Kansas at a policy writing competition organized by the University of Chicago Institute of Politics. Competing on a national stage not only honed their policy analysis and writing skills, but provided an invaluable opportunity to engage with peers from around the country and explore the city of Chicago.
In spring 2025, SAB members and journalism students attended the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Journalism Bootcamp in Washington. This program offers intensive training in the nation’s capital, equipping students with essential media skills, insights into the power of journalism, and access to a network of seasoned professionals.
Each year, SAB members are celebrated at our end-of-year banquet with a special treat—a custom, student-designed Dole Institute Student Advisory Board sweatshirt. Every season unveils a unique design, making each sweatshirt a one-of-a-kind piece that not only commemorates your contributions but also lets you proudly showcase your SAB pride. It’s a stylish, tangible reminder of your commitment to the Dole Institute throughout the year.
